Prakriti: The Journey So Far
Prakriti, the environment society of LSR started its year with sapling plantation by the freshers on the orientation day on 21st July ’11. Following the orientation, carpooling initiative was taken in the month of July and August where a medium was provided for the students commuting from the same place to contact each other and use the method of carpooling to commute to the college, so as to reduce the carbon footprint of the college.
CD collection drive was initiated along with Moser Baer with an aim to collect used, non-re-writable cds. Prakriti collaborated with Green Karbon- a joint initiative of sanctuary Asia magazine and Deutsche Bank in their Biodiversity- Climate Change initiative.
A talk was given by Dr. Anish Andheria, Director of Sanctuary Asia Magazine and Wildlife Conservation Trust on ‘Saving Wildlife–India’ on 23rd of September followed by a nature walk on 3rd September at Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary, New Delhi.
Dr. General Kharab, Chairperson of Animal Welfare Board of India and Mrs. Vasanthi Kumar, founder of STRAW, an NGO that works for the welfare of street animals, delivered a talk on ‘Animal Rights and Welfare’ on 27th september’11. Prakriti also tried to promote a green environment on campus by Sale Of Eco Friendly Products which were made by the members of the society during NSS Diwali Mela in October and conducted a Candle Making Workshop for the students for the same.
Four students of college, Diksha Poddar, Yamini Singh, Aditi Dhyani and Aditi Tusnial were selected as ambassadors of LSR for the regional camp to Bharatpur National Park organized by Green Karbon, guided by Dr. Anish Andheria from 16-18th December. On the basis of the learning during the Bharatpur camp, Prakriti organized a trip to Jim Corbett Tiger Reserve for all its members from 22nd to 24th January 2012. The highlights of the trip was a session with the Field Director, Dr. Mishra and Deputy Director, Dr. C.R. Kavidayal of the Park, bird watching session with Mr. Manoj Sharma, learning flora and fauna with experts of the area, interaction with the villagers along with other activities like visit to the Corbett Museum, watching documentaries, visiting Vulture conservation site, Jungle Safari and learning about other endangered species like that of Mahseer fish.
During Tarang’12, Prakriti organized a competition- Green Biz Plan, on 5th Feb with an aim to make ecology and consumption sustainable and compatible. It was sponsored by Dream Folks, an advertising agency and I-dream and had conducted waste-for-recycling drive for the same purpose. A sincere effort was also made to make Tarang carbon neutral by Carbon Auditing and implementing few corrective measures.
Diksha Poddar, Yamini Singh, Aditi Tusnial and Tarana Chauhan were selected to represent college at TERI YUVA Meet 2012 on 30th and 31st January organized by TERI. Diksha, Yamini and Aditi also participated in the Students energy challenge which was initiated by Students’ Energy, a North –American NGO that works to make people aware of the energy issues faced globally which was held in India on 1st February. Aditi attended Delhi Sustainable Development Summit 2012 (2nd to 4th February). Prakriti also initiated Cleanliness Drive for the visit of DU Garden Committee for the purpose of inspecting the LSR gardens for the 54th Annual DU Flower Show 2012 held on 2nd March. Students from LSR also participated in various categories of flower arrangement competitions conducted by Delhi University. Diksha Poddar and Aditi Tusnial won first prize in western style category, rose arrangement and table decoration and two overall cups. Amudhini Ramakrishnan and Neha Gupta won 3rd prize in rose arrangement. 2nd positions were secured by Garima Jena and Garima Agarwal in rangoli making and Vishakha Singh in Wild flower arrangement category.
Along with these activities, Prakriti also participated in various campaigns and demonstrations organized by WWF and PETA, Tree Plantation drive undertaken by the Mayor of Delhi in the month of August. The society also tried to raise awareness about the current issues by screening documentaries, editing videos and screening them, asking people to sign the pledge poster for an eco friendly Diwali. It also continued with sale of LSR jute bags, introducing more options in design and colours this time. The bags were made by the women of Vidya-an NGO providing employment to rural women of Delhi and Lakshya- Badte Kadam, an NGO that employs young boys making them capable of earning for their needs. To help students perform better at the DU flower show, we conducted a flower arrangement workshop where students with an experience of the same came forward and helped others learn by sharing their ideas and talent.
